My Secret Weapons | Hair, Makeup, & More

Hey, chickpeas! Obsessions/holy grails/favourites – they all mean one thing: can’t go without them. As I was restocking my makeup, hair care, and other miscellaneous things I decided to share with you what I have on my current holy grail list. These items earned their status on my holy grail list because they have always been good to me and I have always repurchased them – even if I used other things in between. I’ve shared many favourites with you, on several occasions but, this time I am sharing with you my secret weapons. These particular products are things that I think make a world of difference in my daily routines and they make me happy because they truly live up to their claims.

Body Care

Old Spice Body Wash Pure Sport: I dislike many of the “girly” smells that body washes come in and the ones that are supposed to be neutral are usually still too annoying for me. That said, there are a few “feminine” body washes I enjoy, although that’s neither here nor there. However, the Old Spice pure sport body wash for men is my ultimate go-to. I don’t know what it is about the scent but I never get tired of it and it always leaves me feeling super fresh and clean. Why it’s my secret weapon? This body wash leaves my skin lightly fragranced with a subtle freshness and kills off any post-workout sweat smell/feeling.

Japanese Body Exfoliating Bath Towel: For those of you who are unaware of what this is, let me explain. It’s like a loofah and a scrub in one. The towel exfoliates your skin while also cleaning your skin like a loofa would. You can wad it up and use it like you would a loofah or open it up and scrub your entire back with it. Why it’s my secret weapon? It has dual functionality: cleaning and exfoliation. Plus, if you get your exfoliating towel at Daiso (the Japanese dollar store), you’re only going to be spending $2 per towel.

Gillette Fusion 5 Proshield: Men’s razors are the bomb dot com! They never leave irritation behind, they always give a super close shave, and they last so much longer! These specific razors are so good, that I sometimes don’t even have to use shaving cream if the blade is fresh – great if you’re in a pinch. Why it’s my secret weapon? Closer shave, better control, no razor burn, and long lifespan.

Speed Stick Ocean Surf Deodorant: You probably noticed I like some men’s things, but that’s just because they seem to smell better and work a little better. Hey, it’s a free world! Anyway, this deodorant works like a charm. The scent is nice and fresh, yet not too masculine. Also, I apply this once in the morning and it sometimes even lasts me into the next day! The best part is that this scent doesn’t overpower my perfumes or body lotions or any other scented items I choose to use. Why it’s my holy grail? This is aluminum-free, works incredibly well, doesn’t irritate my skin, doesn’t clash with other fragrances, and doesn’t leave stains on my clothes.

Hair Care

John Frieda Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Touch-Up Creme: It works as advertised – the formula calms fly-aways and frizz immediately while leaving hair weightless and soft. Why it’s my secret weapon? Well, it’s in the name! In all honesty, this creme is unique in the sense that it can be used on dry hair without making it feel or look greasy or feel crunchy.

Pantene Pro-V Breakage Defense Conditioner: My hair always feels fantastic after I use this conditioner, and it doesn’t leave any residue either. It also smells nice enough but not overbearing. In my opinion, this conditioner does do what it claims as I notice my hair is less brittle if I use it regularly. Why it’s my secret weapon? It transforms my hair into silky, tangle-free, shiny locks after just one use. Plus, I notice that my hair has less split ends and breakage when I use it.

Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Strong: I love the original version of this, but the strengthening version is even better. It works to reduce breakage and protects against damage, meaning your hair can grow longer and remain stronger. Why it’s my secret weapon? It instantly helps my hair look and feel better plus, at this price, it’s easily a stock-up item; and, the product works better than some higher priced treatments I’ve tried. Also, the smell is so good and it lingers.

TRESemme Anti-Frizz Secret: A treatment you use once a week after your wash and towel dry your hair. You just rub a small dollop between your hands and work it into your hair and voila! Your hair can now be blown dry, styled, and then even washed again up to 5 times before you need to reapply this cream. Magic? Yes, it seems so. Why it’s my secret weapon? It works wonders even in humid climates and one small bottle lasts a very long time since you only need a tiny dollop. It doesn’t leave hair greasy or weighed down, either, you’re just left with perfectly frizz-free locks…for an entire week… even after washing.

Maybelline Color Sensational The Mattes – Touch Of Spice: I love Maybelline lipsticks, they are my favourite lipsticks of all time. But this colour from their matte collection is simply phenomenal. It’s a true “your lips but better” shade that works just as beautifully for work and running errands as it does for going out to dinner. Why it’s my secret weapon? The lipstick doesn’t dry my lips out, it looks matte but feels creamy, and shade goes from day to night flawlessly. It also lasts a decent amount of time on the lips.

L’Oreal Infallible The Super Slim Liquid Eyeliner – Black: The pen style of this eyeliner makes it easy to apply and the colour is bold and black with no smudging. Plus, the felt tip applies the colour in an easy and precise line with no skipping or drying out. Why it’s my secret weapon? Has an ultra-fine tip for precise application and creates an easy cat-eye look. It doesn’t smudge or flake off, and the colour doesn’t fade all day and evening.

Physician’s Formula Murumuru Butter Blush – Plum Rose: Silky, fine powder with a true buttery texture makes it apply and blend flawlessly! Plus the colour gives a very natural glow-from-within blush that brightens up the entire face. It can be used alone or with the bronzer for an extra glow. Side note: the tropical coconut smell of the blush is captivating. Why it’s my secret weapon? It works equally well for no-makeup makeup days and for a more glam look. The texture and colour leave a radiant lit-from-within glow without shimmer. I use this shade without bronzer or contour on a daily basis and it still looks gorgeous.

C.O. Bigelow MENTHA Lip Balm: The scent of peppermint in a lip balm is my favourite. Plus, this stuff nourishes the lips and gets rid of any dryness like magic. Why it’s my secret weapon? I love a lip balm that actually delivers results within one use, and this balm does just that. Plus, it smells amazing and has zero shine meaning it can be used alone or under lipstick.

Honourable Mentions & Miscellaneous

C.O. Bigelow My Favorite Night Balm: A nighttime powerhouse that delivers deep healing and moisture to lips while you sleep, so you can wake up feeling like your lips are brand new. Can’t sleep without it.

L’Oreal Original Voluminous Mascara: Time and time again, I keep going back to this classic mascara. It’s perfect: volume is spot on, separation is fantastic, and the lengthening is just right. There is no reason for buying any high-end mascara when this mascara is so great – it’s just the best.

Thayer’s Witch Hazel (any): It’s alcohol-free and can be used for numerous purposes. My main purpose is using it to tone after washing my face. There is nothing else like it! It soothes, tightens pores, seals in moisture, and helps with oil control.

Aquafresh Toothpaste: To be honest, there are two toothpaste types/brands I use, but Aquafresh has been my favourite for decades. My grandparents and parents have been using it since I was a kid. I simply love the original Aquafresh toothpaste. Unfortunately, I can only find it at Walmart now, since no other stores seem to be selling it anymore. I really hope Walmart keeps carrying this toothpaste.
