My Fall/Winter Health Routine

Hello, chickpeas! I went to Instagram to ask you to pick my next blog post. The fall/winter health routine won! So here we are. I’m going to share with you what I do during the fall/winter months to keep healthy inside and out. Ready? Let’s go! georgia-de-lotz-1091384-unsplash.jpg

I drink hot ginger and lemon water: I have gotten into the habit of drinking one or two cups of fresh ginger and lemon “tea” with a teaspoon of honey every day. I like to drink one cup in the morning and sometimes another one in the evening. I swear, it’s helped me get over colds and also helped me avoid them when everyone I knew was sick. How you make it is simple, just dice up some fresh ginger (about 3 tablespoons), slice some of your lemon into 4 rounds, put it all into a small saucepan with about 3 cups of water and simmer over medium-low heat for about 5-8 minutes. Next, let the mixture cool. Spoon some of this condensed mixture into a mug so there is half a mug of space left for hot water, and top with boiling water and add 1 teaspoon honey.

I take a high-quality Omega-3 supplement: I take one every morning. Omega-3 helps with boosting your immune system. It’s not a popular topic when it comes to Omega-3 conversations, as most people know of its benefits for the cardiovascular system, the brain, and skin. However, it is true, taking an Omega-3 supplement is especially important during the colder months of the year as it really does beef up your body’s immunity against the flu and common cold as well as other infections.

I wash my hands & my face: I learned this as a kid and it’s stuck with me for life. Okay, this seems like a no-brainer but it’s important to wash your hands regularly during the day; especially before meals, when you get home, and, if you’re out, never touch your face without washing your hands first. Further, it is important to wash your face when you get home if you’ve been in a public place during flu season – public locations are prime areas of exposure to viruses.

I exercise: Sedentary lifestyles are known contributors to ill health. So, it’s important to exercise daily. I do 30 minutes of exercise daily regardless of it’s a few yoga poses and stretches, going for a walk, or something more intensive. But, I get moving every day. This not only boosts your immune system but it also provides you with more energy and many other long-term benefits.

I drink plenty of water: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. The body uses water for everything – it helps with literally every bodily function, beginning from a cellular level.

I eat well-balanced, homemade meals: I try to eat at home as much as I can. I love going out on occasion as a treat; but, for my day-to-day life, I really enjoy eating wholesome healthy meals I prepare out of fresh ingredients. Even baking a banana bread from scratch at home is much healthier than store-bought loaves with too much sugar and not enough banana. I try to eat as many varieties of fruits and veggies in a day as I can, and I love to eat soups in the colder months. Soups are actually very good for you and a great way to get in some extra veggies, protein, and grains….plus it’s great for your digestive tract. What you put into your body is what your body uses to fuel itself. You wouldn’t put the wrong fuel in your car, so why would you put it into your body?

I find time to relax: Ah, stress…the number one complaint of all adults. Stress reduces the body’s ability to fight off infections and function properly in general. Therefore, I like to de-stress by doing even one small thing (like my skincare routine) every day. Even if my day has been very busy and I’ve had no time to relax and unwind, I try to squeeze in even 10 minutes of something relaxing at the end of my day.

I take care of my skin & hair: Fall/winter usually means extra hydration, extra exfoliation, and more moisturization. My skincare starts in the shower and ends with my facial skincare routine. I think it’s important to look and feel healthy from the outside, too. Important note: don’t take hot showers (unless you were honestly freezing)! Hot water dries your skin out and causes it to lose elasticity, so try to take quite warm but not hot showers. The skin is the largest organ of the human body, so it should be taken care of equally as thoroughly as the rest of you. As for hair, I like to pamper my hair all fall and winter long with homemade or store-bought hair masks, moisturizing shampoos, and fortifying conditioners. I use a lot more heat styling in the colder months, so I make sure to protect my hair with a heat-styling spray.

I dress for the weather, not for style: Sure, I try to look cute even if there is a foot of snow in front of me, but I always make sure my warmth and comfort come first. I made the mistake before of trying to dress to fit with the trends in California or elsewhere that didn’t quite work with my hometown climate. I was miserable all evening and what’s worse is I got sick the next day. So, from now on, I try to make sure I keep true to my style but also keep warm and comfortable. That goes for shoes, too!

I laugh & think positive: Don’t tut at me just yet. I’m not saying this to be cliche, I mean it. Thinking positive will have a huge impact on your mental and emotional state, which in turn can have a huge impact on your physical well-being. Therefore, I keep my thoughts as positive as possible, think good thoughts, and try to laugh as much as I can. A great way to get some food feels in if you’ve had a bad day is to eat your favourite meal or drink your favourite fall drink and watch a feel-good movie/TV show.
